NORMS Industry/Occupation Database: Census 2000 Codes

Graphical depiction of the NORMS logo The Industry/Occupation Database queries will generate tables of the number of deaths, years of potential life lost (YPLL), and proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) for Bureau of Census 2000 Industry and Occupation Classification System codes. In addition to industry and occupation, selection criteria include year, age group (15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, or 85 years and older), race, gender, and Hispanic origin, but only for a selected list of states (and years) for which industry and occupation coding from death certificates met NCHS quality criteria between 1985 and 1999 as well as states (and years) for which industry and occupation codes from death certificates were compiled by the NOMS system, 2003, 2004 and 2007-2012 [NIOSH. 2014. National Occupational Mortality Surveillance (NOMS). U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations and Field Studies, Surveillance Branch.]. The industry and occupation crosswalks that are provided on the NORMS site tabulate how the Census 1990 Industry and Occupation Classification System codes were converted to the Census 2000 Industry and Occupation Classification System codes generated by these (Industry/Occupation Database) queries. Industries/Occupations with less than five deaths in all participating states, or with less than 10 deaths in an individual state, are suppressed. PMRs are generated for Census 2000 industries and occupations with five or more deaths, but only for residents of all participating states and all selected years (combined), and only for the following time intervals:

  • 1985-1989
  • 1985-1994
  • 1985-1999
  • 1985-1999, 2003, 2004 and 2007-2012
  • 1990-1994
  • 1990-1999
  • 1990-1999, 2003, 2004 and 2007-2012
  • 1995-1999
  • 1995-1999, 2003, 2004 and 2007-2012
  • 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2007-2012
  • 2008-2012

County-level queries of the Industry/Occupation database are precluded.

PMR queries involving many causes of death may take several minutes. Queries involving subcategories of race, gender, and/or Hispanic origin that are generated for "Occupation Within Industries" may take several minutes because of the large amount of data that may be generated. Users should be aware that the number of participating states varies over time. Comparisons between different time intervals may not be statistically comparable.
